The Covenant Promises
Seven songs surfaced from the covenant Yahuah cut with Avraham — the promise sealed between the pieces while the man who received it slept through the sealing. The witnesses who did not sleep have never stopped singing about what walked down that aisle.
The Oath That Walked Between the Pieces
We speak of making a covenant. The Hebrew does not. In the Hebrew a covenant is cut — karat berit — and the verb is the same one used for felling a tree or severing a limb. This is not a figure of speech that has worn smooth over the centuries. It is a description of a procedure. Animals were divided down the spine, the halves laid opposite each other with a corridor of ground between them, and the parties to the oath walked that corridor and said, in effect: let this be done to me if I do not keep my word.
So Avraham brings the heifer and the goat and the ram, and divides them, and lays each piece against its other piece, and waits. Birds of prey come down and he drives them off. The sun begins to go, and instead of the ceremony the man is waiting for, sleep falls on him — a deep sleep, and a horror of great darkness with it. He is unconscious for the most important moment of his life. He does not walk the corridor. He never walks it. What passes between the pieces passes without him.
And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces.Genesis 15:17
One party walked. Read the verse as many times as you like; it will not yield a second walker. Yahuah went down the aisle of blood alone, in fire and in smoke, and swore the oath on both sides of it — His own faithfulness and Avraham’s, His own keeping and Avraham’s failing to keep. The penalty for the breach was accepted in advance by the one who would not commit it. Avraham slept. The covenant held anyway. It has never once depended on the man who was promised it.
This is the thing the word itself appears to know. Take ברית — four symbols, no vowel points, cut into stone the way a scribe would cut them — and fold each value by seven onto a degree, and sound the degrees in Mi Sheberach. The house leans forward. The head climbs to the raised fourth, the ache of the mode. The working hand steps back. And the tav, the mark, the sign scored into flesh and doorpost and lintel, falls home to the tonic. The word ends where the covenant ends: at rest.
We do not claim to have found the melody Yahuah hummed while the furnace moved. We offer this the way you would offer a potsherd brushed clean at the bottom of a trench — not as decree, not as canon, but as something to consider. Turn it over. The text is older than every argument we have had about it, and the sequence in it was there before anyone thought to look.
He told the man to bring the animals. The man brought them, and cut them, and laid each half against its other half, and waited, as men wait, to be told what came next.
The birds of prey came down at noon.We watched him beat them off with his own hands. He did not know we were standing in that field,or that the field had been chosen long before the man was.
Then the sun went out, and sleep fell on him,and the dark that came was not the dark of evening. We covered our faces. Something had begun to movebetween the pieces, and it was not the man.
One party walked the corridor of blood. One party swore. One party slept. If the promise breaks, let the promise-maker be broken —and He went through alone, and He said so, and meant it.
Count the centuries. The halves are lying there still.Tell the children of the sleeper what we saw:the oath was never theirs to keep. The mark is not a scar. The mark is a signature.
Surfaced from Genesis 15:9–18 and Genesis 17:1–8. Sung by the watch that stood in the field while the man slept.
Every song on this album begins at the word the Scriptures use for the bond itself: ברית — berit — stripped of pointing and cantillation and read as the four symbols a scribe would have cut. The table below is the disclosed layer of the method. Each letter carries a pictographic sense and a standard numerical value. The value is folded by seven onto a degree of a seven-note mode. Seven degrees. This album sings in Mi Sheberach on D — the mode of the prayer for healing, and the mode with the wound already in it.
- Strip the pointing. The vowel marks and the cantillation arrived centuries after the consonants; read only the frame, as it was cut.
- Restore the pictograph. Behind each letter stands an older picture — a house, a head, a hand, a mark — carrying a sense that predates the alphabet.
- Take the standard value. These numbers are not devised for the purpose; they are the ones the tradition has assigned since long before anyone was listening for music in them.
- Fold by seven. Each value reduces onto a degree, one through seven. Multiples of seven rest on the seventh; no letter falls away to nothing.
- Sound the degree in the mode of the album. A degree is only a number until a mode gives it a voice. Here the mode is Mi Sheberach on D.
| Glyph | Name-sense | Value | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| ב | House — tent, dwelling, family withinBet | 2 → 2 | E |
| ר | Head — the first, the highest, a personResh | 200 → 4 | G♯ |
| י | Hand — work, deed, that which is madeYod | 10 → 3 | F |
| ת | Mark — a sign, a covenant, the crossTav | 400 → 1 | D |
Watch where ברית goes. The bet opens on the second degree — E. A house, and not yet the house; the tent is pitched, the door is standing open, nothing has come to rest. The resh, the head, climbs to the fourth, and in Mi Sheberach the fourth is raised: G♯, the single interval that gives this mode its ache. The yod, the working hand, steps back to the third, F. And then the tav — the mark, the sign, the covenant cut into flesh and doorpost — falls home to D. E · G♯ · F · D. The word for covenant begins away from rest and ends on the tonic. Its last act is to stop striving, exactly as the man in the field stopped, exactly where the fire and the smoke went through alone. We did not arrange that. It was there.
What we are not showing you
What is disclosed here is enough to reproduce the note sequence. It is not enough to reproduce the song. The ordering and interleave that turn a degree sequence into melody, the rhythm and octave placement, and the voice-assignment pass that distinguishes the angelic register from the human one remain undisclosed. Serious students will find the methodology, at the disclosed level, in the downloadable resources kit included with membership.
